Is sea water good for eczema? What the evidence actually says

Full disclosure: I'm in the camp it doesn't work for
For as long as I can remember, the sea has mostly meant stinging. Not the poetic kind of stinging that gives way to relief — just burning that made me want to get out. And in twenty-odd trips to the coast, I don't think my skin ever came home better than it went. If anything, two weeks by the sea usually left it worse.
So now I have a strange relationship with the water. I'll be standing somewhere beautiful, the kind of place people fly across a continent for, genuinely wanting to dive in — and I don't. Because I already know how it's going to feel, and my body has filed that under “don't.” That's the part nobody writes about: it isn't just that a remedy didn't work, it's that it quietly took something from me.
Which is exactly why I wanted to look this up properly. When every article and every comment section says the ocean is nature's cure for eczema, and your own experience says the opposite, one of two things is true: either you're the exception, or the story is wrong. I went looking for which — and honestly, the answer surprised me in both directions.
What happens when you separate the salt from the sun?
Almost all of the “sea water heals skin” evidence traces back to the Dead Sea, where people spend weeks bathing in mineral-heavy water and sitting in intense sunshine. Those two things arrive together, so the interesting question is what happens when you pull them apart. Three studies did exactly that, and they point the same way.
- Sun beat water by a mile. A study of 81 people split them into bathing only, sunbathing only, or both. Bathing alone improved things by 28%. Sunbathing alone: 73%. Both: 83%. The authors concluded the main therapeutic factor was sun exposure, “possibly enhanced” by the bathing. (1996)
- Expensive salt didn't beat cheap salt. In a double-blind trial, Dead Sea bath salt was compared against ordinary common salt. The difference wasn't statistically significant. (Halevy 1997)
- Salt water didn't beat tap water. The cleanest design of the three: each person soaked one elbow in 24% salt solution and the other in tap water. Both elbows improved significantly. Between them — no meaningful difference. (Gambichler 2001)
Two honest caveats before anyone quotes this at a dermatologist. Those three studies were done in psoriasis, not eczema — the equivalent eczema trial has never been run. And they're small. But they're the only studies anyone has that isolate the variable everyone credits, and all three land in the same place.
There's also a pattern here that goes beyond salt. When a big UK trial tested emollient bath additives in 483 children, they produced no clinical benefit over ordinary care. When researchers tested bleach baths, they turned out not to be clearly better than plain water baths either. Three different additives, three times the same finding: the bath does the work, and what you put in it adds surprisingly little.
The Dead Sea isn't “salty sea water”
This is the substitution that powers most of the internet's confidence on this topic. Ocean water is about 3.5% salt, and 85–97% of that is sodium chloride — table salt. The Dead Sea is about 34% salt, and roughly half of it is magnesium chloride. It's not a saltier ocean; it's a different substance entirely, ten times more concentrated and dominated by a different mineral.
That matters because the most-cited study in this whole field — Proksch 2005 — had people soak one forearm in a 5% magnesium-rich Dead Sea salt solution and the other in tap water, and found better barrier function and hydration on the treated arm. It's a real result, and the authors credited the magnesium. But it measured skin properties rather than eczema severity, the barrier benefit appeared only in a subgroup, and it says nothing about swimming in the Mediterranean, where magnesium is a small fraction of what's in that forearm bath.
The strongest study in the field is more interesting and more honest about itself: a trial of 180 people with moderate-to-severe eczema found that getting UV light treatment while bathing in a 10% salt solution beat UV light alone by a meaningful margin. Which is genuinely encouraging — but note what it compares. Salt plus light versus light. Nobody has run salt versus water.
So why does everyone's skin get better at the beach?
Because a beach holiday is not one intervention. It's six, delivered simultaneously:
- Sunlight, which is uncontrolled phototherapy — and phototherapy is an actual eczema treatment prescribed by dermatologists. In one Dead Sea study of children, higher cumulative UV exposure correlated with better remission.
- Escape from your home — no dust mites in your mattress, no mould in the bathroom, no dry heated air, none of the detergents and cleaning products you live with.
- Less stress, which is one of the most commonly reported flare triggers there is.
- Different behaviour — people moisturise far more diligently on a trip than in an ordinary week.
- Humid air, though this one cuts both ways: population data actually associate eczema positively with humidity and negatively with sunshine hours.
- Timing. People book the trip when their skin is at its worst, and skin at its worst tends to improve anyway. Statisticians call it regression to the mean; it flatters every remedy you happen to try at rock bottom.
We know this stack of variables is powerful, because someone finally tested one version of it properly. Mountain-air climate therapy makes the same kind of claims as the seaside — special air, more sun, no dust mites — and the observational evidence was glowing: 15 studies, over 40,000 patients, improvement in the overwhelming majority. Then researchers randomly assigned 84 children either to six weeks of treatment in the Alps or six weeks of equivalent treatment at home. In the short term the Alps won clearly. Six months later, the difference was gone.
That study is the honest answer to my own “maybe two weeks just wasn't long enough.” Dead Sea protocols do run around four weeks, so yes, a fortnight is a light dose. But even the full course fades — relapse in the psoriasis data came a few months later, and the one randomised trial of climate therapy found nothing left at six months. Best case, the sea is a holiday from your eczema. It was never going to be an exit.
Why it soothes some people and burns others
Across a few hundred first-person accounts I read through in eczema communities, the split runs at roughly 55–60% “this helps me,” about 25% “this is agony,” and the rest somewhere conditional in between. (Heavily biased, of course — miracle stories get posted and upvoted; quiet disappointments don't.)
But underneath the split there's a pattern that's far more useful than the ratio: the stinging tracks the state of your skin, not your luck. Where skin is cracked, weeping or scratched open, salt water hurts — reliably, for nearly everyone. Where skin is intact but inflamed, it's much more likely to feel calming. One person who'd lived by the beach for over a decade put it bluntly: someone with a flare covering a third of their body does not walk into the ocean and come out with the best skin they've had in years. That's just not reality.
The Nottingham dermatologists make the fairest version of this point: broken skin stings in any water, not just salty water. Which reframes my own history a little. My worst sea experiences were during my worst skin — and I read that as “the sea hurts me,” when a fairer reading might be “I went in when I shouldn't have.”
Two other things worth knowing. First, the benefit is short-lived: the most common refrain in those communities is that skin flares again within days of getting home — which is where the running joke about needing to move to the coast comes from. Second, people who try to reproduce it in a bathtub usually can't, and there's a mundane reason. Getting anywhere near ocean salinity takes far more salt than the package suggests — the NHS leaflet above talks in kilograms, not cupfuls.
What's being sold to you along the way
“The ocean is a natural bleach bath.” This one is everywhere, and it's a mutation of a real claim about chlorinated swimming pools. A bleach bath works through sodium hypochlorite — an oxidising disinfectant. Sea water is sodium chloride — table salt, chemically inert. The two words share “chlor” and that's about it. (For what it's worth, bleach baths themselves turned out not to clearly beat plain water baths either.)
“Salt water kills the bacteria on eczema skin.” There is no good evidence for this, and the microbiology runs the other way. Staphylococcus aureus, the bacterium most associated with eczema flares, is remarkably salt-tolerant — labs use 7.5% salt agar specifically to grow it while suppressing competitors. Sea water is 3.5%. The one microbiome study of Dead Sea treatment did find the skin's bacterial mix shifting, but a significant drop in S. aureus was not among its findings.
“Magnesium from the sea absorbs into your skin.” Reviews of transdermal magnesium don't support it: magnesium ions struggle to cross intact skin at all. There's a genuinely interesting wrinkle here — laboratory work shows magnesium does pass more readily through damaged skin, which might explain why Proksch's barrier benefit showed up specifically in people whose skin was leakiest. But that's a hypothesis about a concentrated magnesium bath, not a justification for a €30 spray.
“Salt rooms and halotherapy help eczema.” A Cleveland Clinic dermatologist's summary is hard to improve on: there just aren't any sound studies supporting it. Most of the research that surfaces on this is published on the websites of companies selling salt rooms.
And one genuine curiosity for the “more salt is good” story: a 2019 paper in Science Translational Medicine found that sodium chloride pushes human immune cells toward the exact inflammatory pathway involved in eczema, and that eczema-affected skin already contains elevated sodium. Nobody has shown that swimming does this to you, so don't panic about it — but you'll notice it never gets mentioned in the articles selling sea minerals.
If you're going in anyway — the practical bit
None of this is an argument against going in the sea. It's an argument against expecting it to fix you, and against paying for the bottled version. Dermatology organisations broadly agree on the how:
- Don't swim during a bad flare, or when skin is openly broken, weeping or infected. This is the one point every source agrees on.
- Moisturise before you go in — a thicker layer than usual, ointment rather than lotion, as a barrier. (One caveat from the UK National Eczema Society that nobody else mentions: if you're a weak swimmer, skip this — greasy limbs make a lifeguard rescue harder.)
- Sunscreen goes on after, not instead. Emollient first, wait around half an hour, then a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
- Rinse in fresh water straight after, and don't let salt dry on your skin — as it evaporates it keeps pulling water out. This is probably the single most common mistake behind “the beach dried me out.”
- Get out of the wet swimwear, pat dry rather than rub, and moisturise within a few minutes while skin is still damp.
- First time, go short. Ten minutes tells you what you need to know without costing you the rest of the trip.
One proportionate safety note: ocean water leaves marine bacteria on your skin for up to a day afterwards, and warm sea water plus openly broken skin is a recognised (if uncommon) route to infection. That's not a reason to avoid the sea. It is another reason not to get in when your skin is raw.
How you'd actually find out, for you
Here's the thing I keep landing on with eczema questions like this one. The research can tell you what's true on average across a few hundred people. It cannot tell you which camp you're in — and on this topic the camps are genuinely split down the middle.
A beach holiday is the hardest possible thing to read, because six variables move at once. But that also makes it a good test of whether you have any data at all. If your skin calms on day one, in the water, that's a different story from calming on day four after two proper nights of sleep. If it flares the evening you get back, that tells you something about home rather than about the sea. None of that is knowable from memory — a fortnight later, everything blurs into “the holiday was good for my skin.”

It doesn't hand you a verdict — a pattern in your own data is a lead worth testing, not proof of a cause. But it beats guessing, and it certainly beats a decade of blaming the wrong thing.
For me, the honest conclusion is smaller and better than I expected. The sea probably never was going to clear my skin — the evidence says it doesn't do that for anyone, at least not for long. But my instinct that it hurts me isn't a verdict on the sea either. It's a record of every time I got in when my skin was already broken. Next time, if my skin's calm, I might just get in and find out properly.
